About The Plan

We are rolling up our sleeves to understand, explore and determine what BGSU needs and envisions for the campus.

What is a Campus Master Plan ?

A campus plan is an incredible tool that provides the campus community an opportunity to re-examine campus improvements every 10 to 20 years. We assess and recommend improvements to academic life, sustainability, campus life, infrastructure, mobility and open space to prioritize near and long-term campus project improvements. The Campus Master Plan is an extension of the Forward: BGSU Strategic Plan and will guide the physical development of our campus. The campus plan provides a clear, flexible, and implementable framework that is bold, visionary and adaptable without compromising core University values and principles. Our campus plan will not only be a vision for facility investment for the entire campus, but also a focused transformation for the STEM corridor.

Have We Ever Done This Before?

BGSU has a history of inclusive planning that is integrated with its strategic, academic, programmatic and enrollment plans. Campus Master Plans are updated approximately every 10-15 years to stay current with academic, research and student life needs.  The last BGSU Campus Master Plan was completed in 2010 and many of the project recommendations have been implemented. BGSU is committed to continuing to vision the future of campus as we embark on the next generation of meaningful campus engagement and inclusive planning.

Why is This Important to Me?

BGSU is committed to driving public good through student success and innovative engagement.  As part of the BGSU community, your voice matters.  We want to hear about your perspective on your campus interactions, experiences, academic life, student services, and campus connections.  Your thoughts, concerns, and feedback throughout the planning process will help guide the Campus Master Plan and shape the campus for years to come.  Our aim is to work together to co-create a dynamic, connected and enriching campus for the next generation of BGSU students, faculty and staff.  Please join us!

Process and Timeline

Each phase of the Campus Master Plan builds upon the previous one to generate ideas and deepen our understanding of the issues and opportunities that will inform the campus planning effort.  We look forward to hearing from you!

Understand

The planning process starts with a process of discovery – getting to know Bowling Green State University:  your goals, aspirations, current challenges, and opportunities for the future. We will gain a deep understanding of the existing campus facility conditions, capacity, and the way they are used.  Systems affecting the daily life on campus will be assessed including infrastructure and circulation; pedestrian, vehicular and parking. These systems determine the physical framework of the campus and opportunities for sustainable development.

Explore

During this phase, we will use the data and analysis completed in the Understand phase to produce a full understanding of the campus’s challenges and opportunities.  We will test numerous ways to organize uses on campus, accommodate facility needs, create improved transportation linkages, and activate campus spaces. From this test of ideas, we will share potential options for the future of campus.

Realize

Through the continued engagement of the campus community, the strongest ideas will emerge into a draft Campus Master Plan. The plan will add specificity to the character, location, and amount of new development, renovation, reuse or re-purposed space. Additionally, together we will create recommendations for improvements to campus systems. During this last phase, we will document the plan in a final report. The campus master plan will provide an adaptable framework to help guide BGSU’s future vision.
